Dr. Larkin's Reviews

I have now treated with several doctors at OCC. Dr. Larkin is the most recent orthopedist I have consulted with. I met with him to have my hip pain/ mobility issues examined. Dr. Larkin very patiently took a detailed history and then ordered appropriate imaging of both my hips. Once a problem was recognized, we discussed my condition and options and reached a treatment plan.
I have had chronic low back pain and that pain became significantly more pronounced over the years and especially during winter time and adverse weather in general. Unbeknownst to me the additional pain was in substantial part attributable to painful and debilitating osteoarthritis in my both of hips but which manifested itself to me as increased low back pain associated with pre-existing spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis and other underlying conditions.
As I began additional treatments for low back pain with physical therapy as a prelude to an ablation procedure at L4-5 the pain actually became much worse and finally I discerned all of the pain in my low back/ sciatic nerve area might not be from the L4–5-S1 issues I have had for roughly 25 years but rather some other phenomenon. I had an epiphany: It would be prudent to meet with a hip specialist and voila: X-rays revealed that I am in need of bi- lateral hip replacement surgery. I know Dr. Larkin is highly regarded and highly skilled at such procedures and I am so looking forward to being relieved of at least one of the pain issues that has kept me virtually immobilized and turned me into a homebody. With Dr. Larkin’s help and some additional procedures to address other orthopedic issues I am hoping that someday in the not too distant future, I can lead what more closely resembles a normal life again. I feel so fortunate to have an orthopedist of Dr.Larkin’s level of skill and caring to help me address my issues.
It is still astonishing to me that over the course of 25 years of dealing with and treating low back pain neither I nor anyone else previously had ascertained that I had hip deterioration issues in addition to lumbar/ sciatic nerve issues.
The wonderful thing is when you finally realize the full nature and extent of your medical issues you can then take meaningful steps to address it and hopefully vastly improve your quality of life. Better late than never.
I now know what they mean when they say getting old isn’t for sissies. Health, mobility and pain problems can be numerous and varied and often difficult to narrow down from a differential diagnosis. But at least I now know these highly treatable hip issues can be resolved via highly effective hip joint replacement surgeries and meaningful relief is on the horizon. Postscript:
I neglected to hit the send button for the above review and therefore I have now had hip replacement surgery for my left hip which was an astounding and greatly appreciated success.
I’m finishing physical therapy and looking forward to my right hip being successfully replaced and the additional relief/mobility I will receive from that procedure.
Obviously, I am elated with Dr. Larkin’s performance both as a surgeon and as a kind and caring human being, patiently communicating with me regarding the various aspects involved in having this long suffering condition rectified.
If I could give Dr. Larkin 10 stars I would. He certainly deserves them.
I won’t be returning to the running I loved and had to give up almost 40 years ago but at least now I will be able to walk like a normal human being without the constant and relentless pain having highly osteoarthritic hips inflicts.

We spent time reviewing the X-rays and discussed next steps. I would highly recommend Dr. Larkin and his team.

Dr Larkin is great. Communication and followup from his staff are equally good. Results less than eight weeks from surgery are very good as well. I nearly have full functionality of my replaced left knee. The scar is surprisingly minor compared to other knee surgeries I've seen. I most likely won't be a panty hose model like Joe Namath, but it looks good. Haha! I'm very pleased with the results to date! I also need a replacement on my right knee and I will have Dr Larkin do that surgery as well when I'm ready. Without reservation, I would recommend his skill and services to family and friends.

My experience so far had been positive except for the fact that I’ve been told that I can’t have dual insurance on file and I was told if I don’t cancel one of them I will not be able to proceed forward with my surgery that’s scheduled. I need both insurance options as I am a cancer patient and do not feel I should have to cancel one. Not sure what’s going to happen now.

Dr. Larkin is the best! [He replaced my hip, 8 years ago.) In fact, he's so good that my knee pain has disappeared, since he told me that it needs to be replaced. He's the only doc I'd let do it.
