Dr. Robert Leland joined Cornerstone Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in 2021. He is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and dual fellowship trained in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery and orthopedic trauma who has practiced in Colorado since 2001. He is one of Colorado’s most experienced orthopedic Foot and Ankle surgeons and one of the first in the country to perform ankle replacements. Dr. Leland’s treatment philosophy centers on thoroughly educating patients about their condition and treatment options so they can best be involved in the decision-making process. He is a member of the Colorado Medical Society, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and AO Alumni.

Prior to working at Cornerstone Orthopedics, Dr. Leland graduated from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency training at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center. Dr. Leland completed fellowship training in Foot and Ankle Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and Orthopedic Trauma at University Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden, Germany. He subsequently returned to Detroit as Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery in the Department of Orthopedics at Wayne State University and Chief of Orthopedics at the VA Medical Center where he was twice awarded the Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Leland currently serves as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado and received the Colonel Alan Bucknell Award for Teacher of the Year in 2020.

Dr. Leland specializes in all aspect of foot and ankle problems including sports injuries, complex deformity, fractures, ankle replacement, arthroscopy, arthritis, and bunion correction. He additionally treats general orthopedic trauma. Outside of work, Dr. Leland loves sharing in the lives of his grown children, exercising and playing hockey.

I Had recently slipped. I sprained my left ankle and broke my right. Dr Leland helped me. I appreciate the the fact that he took the time to do an extra X-ray to make sure I didn't need surgery. He put my sprained ankle in a brace that the urgent care did not do. It felt so much better after an hour. This was the second time I have seen doctor Leland about my planters fascitious, Unfortunately, the first round of suggestions, none of them worked. I did have to go back to see him to get shots put into both feet, still having some issues with the right. I'd been having foot and ankle issues for a while since being hit on the inside of my foot with a wayward golf ball. I contacted Orthopedic Centers of Colorado and they scheduled me with Dr. Leland within a week of my phone call. At the very first appointment Dr. Leland had my foot xray'ed and had me scheduled for an mri. As soon as the mri was completed I had an appointment with Dr. Leland within 4 days. From that appointment we scheduled the surgery needed and had it done within 2 weeks of that. All in it was right about a month from my first phone call to having the surgery needed. Dr. Leland gave me plenty of confidence going into the surgery and explained everything he was going to do. Before my surgery I was researching it all online and expected to have a very long and painful recovery. It seems Dr. Leland did a fantastic job because at 10 weeks from the surgery I am back to no restrictions! Everything I've seen online other people are at minimum of 6 months after surgery before they had no restrictions. I am very grateful to be back to being pain free and with no restrictions this quickly!

My experience with Dr Leland has been life alerting. On 12/15/2023 I was in a car accident and suffered bilateral fractures of both tibulas and fibulas. It is because of Dr Leland's expertise as a highly qualified orthopedic surgeon, and excellent instruction from his Physical Therapists, that I am fully recovered and walking w/o a walker or a cane. All four bones were severely shattered. They healed within 5 months after the first surgery. In July 2024 Dr Leland removed 28 pieces of hardware from my ankles. Surgery #2. I had been given the option of having the plates and screws removed as they no longer served any purpose. My bones were strong again. It's been a year since the accident and all of my physical activities have been restored for the past 4 months. I am 80 years old and my walk is steady and balanced and basically pain free. My pain after the accident was a #10+ and since Sept. has been between a #0.5 - #1.0. There are not enough words to thank Dr Leland for performing 2 remarkable surgeries that have given me back my quality of life. My gratitude is immeasurable.

Dr. Leland was amazing! I had a previous surgery with someone else, and my ankle started to crumble. I was in extreme pain, and during the follow up with the other Dr., I was told that I would probably have to have my foot amputated. Needless to say that is a very extreme option. I went and got a second opinion from Dr.Leland, and he was shocked to hear that another Dr. told me that. During my first appointment with him, he told me that if he did the surgery, it would either be a home run, or a strike out. 50/50 as it was a complicated surgery. His aid Erin (sp?) called me the next day and asked me if I had any more questions. I then made a follow up appointment and he answered all my questions. Had the second surgery, and it went great! He saved my foot! I have been out of work since March, so I’m really looking forward to going back to work next year, after it’s healed completely. Went to see Dr. Leland for broken bone in my foot, minor metatarsal protrusion behind joint. Surgery to pin was suggested by an emergency room physician. Dr Leland and I, after his examination of the Xrays and councillation, determined that best course of treatment was to let bone mend without surgery. He examined me four weeks later and we determined that the broken bone is healing very well with little pain. Dr. Leland has respect for his patient's input and provides guidance based on his professional expertise.

Dr. Leland gave me the best possible diagnosis for my ankle fracture and sprain. He examined it very quickly, had me push and pull and rotate, and determined it was a minor break, a lateral (outside) malleolus (bottom of the fibula) avulsion (ligaments just pulled the bone piece off) fracture. No surgery and no cast; simple compared to his other patients I am sure. One star off because he only spent about 7.5 minutes with me, after I waited 5 days for an appointment, and hobbled to the car and up to his office on crutches. He examined me so fast and barely waited for my answers, he easily could have missed my having pain in a certain location or configuration. Bottom line: I know they allow at least 20 minutes per time slot, and I want all that I’m paying for. I am sure he's a brilliant surgeon, and busy with other patients who also need to see him. I think he should slow down and talk to people a bit more.

Just under 10 years ago, I shattered my talus in a fall injury that some surgeons told me would cause "permanent disability and constant pain while walking, if I ever walked again." I chose Doctor Leland as my surgeon due to his magnificent reviews and recommendations of high ranking friends in the medical field. He patched me back together without even needing to graft my ankle (which I had signed a waiver to allow, if necessary, which would have limited almost all of the right/left movement of my ankle altogether). Doctor Leland saved my mobility and (after some years' recovery and PT) restored my life to how it was before my surgery. I am literally grateful to him every time I walk. Surgery is terrifying—but you couldn't be in better hands. Trust me. Thank you doctor!

My recent visit to see Robert Leland, MD was a Five Star visit in every way. I had barely sat down in the waiting room and I was called in to an exam room. I explained why I was there and a new x-ray was recommended and obtained immediately. They were in a room just down the hall. Dr Leland was able to explain clearly what the situation was and what my options were. A course of action was decided and treatment started before I left. I was given instructions on how to move forward. I left feeling happy and satisfied that the correct course of action was being facilitated. I want to add that this all took place within a 30-35 minute timeframe. That is really rather incredible. (More than five stars.)
