Efren Caballes

Originally from the Chicago-land area, Dr. Efren Caballes joined Cornerstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in 2016. His approach to patient care is based on combining all available modalities for musculoskeletal conditions including exercise, physical modalities, bracing, injections, and regenerative medicine. One of his special interests is diagnostic and therapeutic use of musculoskeletal ultrasound. His clinical repertoire of treatments focuses on continually balancing the patient’s physical goals with optimal recovery needs.

Prior to working at Cornerstone Orthopedics, Dr. Caballes earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Molecular Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and attended medical school at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City (NYC). Dr. Caballes completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at New York University (NYU) Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident, and completed a PM&R Sports Medicine Fellowship at NYU. His training also provided him the opportunity to take care of the numerous endurance athletes at the NYU Center for Musculoskeletal Care Running Performance Lab, as well as musicians and dancers at the Julliard School and Harkness Center for Dance Injuries.

Dr. Caballes developed an enthusiasm for running while in NYC, where he joined the Prospect Park Track Club and volunteered with Back on My Feet – an organization combating homelessness through the power of running. Since moving to Colorado, he has become actively involved in treating runners and triathletes ranging from recreational athletes to professional and Olympic athletes.

Dr. Caballes is currently certified as a level 1 USA Track and Field coach and was selected to serve as a volunteer physician for the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center in March 2020. Recent and current academic positions include sports ultrasound faculty for the America Medical Society for Sports medicine, clinical instructor for Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in NY, and clinical instructor for the St. Anthony’s Medical Center Sports Medicine fellowship.

As an avid runner and outdoor enthusiast, Dr. Caballes has completed several marathons in New York City, Chicago, and Berlin to name a few. He also enjoys cross country skiing, cycling, hiking, and traveling/running Ragnar Relay Races with his wife.

Diagnosis was exactly correct, after months of seeing other docs and PTs. The procedure to fix things happened soon after. I seem to be on the mend after months of pain. Could not be more pleased.
