Dr. Derek Purcell is a board-certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine, with a concentration on conditions and injuries of the shoulder and knee. His expertise is in advanced arthroscopic techniques for the shoulder and knee, complex knee ligament reconstruction, cartilage restoration, and joint replacement for the knee and shoulder.
Dr. Purcell graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. After attending the University of Virginia School of Medicine, he completed his Orthopedic Surgery residence as well as Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis.
During his fellowship, Dr. Purcell served as assistant team physician for the St. Louis Rams (NFL), Blues (NHL), and Cardinals (MLB). He was a former member of the NFL Team Physicians Society. He has served as a physician for the St. Louis Cardinals spring training camp in Jupiter, FL as well as assisted with the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, IN.
In Colorado Springs, Dr. Purcell serves as a Team Physician for Colorado College Athletics. He has also assisted with the care of multiple high school athletic teams. He currently assists with Vista Ridge High School, Colorado Springs Christian School, and Cheyenne Mountain High School. He is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

As a certified physician assistant, Matt works alongside Dr. Derek Purcell in the evaluation and treatment of orthopedic and sports medicine conditions. He assists in the operating room with upper extremity and knee surgery, including both arthroscopy and joint replacement procedures. Matt received his PA certification after graduating with a Masters in Health Science from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the CCOE team, Matt worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD with the shoulder, trauma, and sports medicine services.
