Growing up an athlete, Dr. Swinehart knows firsthand the pain and frustration that comes with injury. As a college pitcher, he had to undergo surgery to reconstruct a torn ligament in his elbow. This experience of getting back to play after injury, with the help of his team orthopedic surgeon, inspired Dr. Swinehart to pursue a career in Orthopedics.

As a Sports Medicine specialist, Dr. Swinehart’s practice focuses on getting his patients back to the activities they are passionate about as quickly as possible. Whether this be a new injury or an issue that has been lingering for years, Dr. Swinehart’s goal is to bring you the most up-to-date information on your condition and the most advanced surgical techniques to treat it.

Dr. Swinehart grew up in rural Ohio before attending Belmont University in Nashville, TN, where he was a member of the baseball team. He received his Medical Degree from the University of South Carolina in Greenville, SC, where he had the privilege of performing research focused on shoulder arthroplasty under Dr. Richard Hawkins at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas.

After medical school, Dr. Swinehart returned to Nashville and completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. There, he had the opportunity to take care of athletes of all levels, including Vanderbilt University (NCAA Division I) and the Nashville Predators (NHL).

After residency, Dr. Swinehart completed an extra year of sub-specialization in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at The Ohio State University. There, he focused on advanced arthroscopic procedures of the knee and shoulder, cartilage restoration of the knee, complex knee and shoulder reconstruction, and primary and revision shoulder replacement. He also served as a team physician with The Ohio State Buckeyes Football and Hockey teams.

Dr. Swinehart went over my MRI results in great detail, even drawing out what happened during my injury to ensure I understood. I came to him for a second opinion due my own provider feeling it sufficed sending me an email in regards to my MRI results, which resulted in me lacking confidence in their recommendations in my recovery options. I left there confident in the recommendations provided, and that my injury wouldn't require surgery to resume my normal activities. Highly recommend if you're looking for the best assessment possible and someone not tell you that you need unnecessary surgery just to fatten their pockets. This was my second shoulder procedure the first was a repair several years ago with another physician, where the recovery/experience was long extensive and painful. This second procedure was caused by further damage and a severance of my left rotator cuff with pain from my left fingertips to my right as well as neck pain. I met with several orthopedic surgeons and chose Dr Swinehart, that choice was made primarily because at first he offered several alternatives before we jointly opted for a shoulder RAA surgery.
The preoperative process and education with Dr Swinehart and his staff was seamless and made me fully prepared for what was ahead. Subsequent follow-ups with Dr Swinehart, his staff and then Jolene and Michael in their physical therapy rehabilitation center has been exceptional. I am 3-months post-op and progressing exceptionally well with regard to flexibility and strength and now with no pain in my shoulder and arm. As a 67-year-old former competitive athlete and avid golfer and, having had prior surgeries and procedures as a result of sports injuries, this is by far the most severe procedure (Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty) that I had undergone. Surprisingly this is also been the shortest recovery I had experienced, this is no doubt due to the care instruction and attentiveness of Dr Swinehart his staff and the OCC Physical Therapy team.
